The Emerald Coast is a dream vacation spot for families with kids. Located on the Florida pan handle along the Gulf of Mexico, the beautiful coastline is named after its breathtaking emerald green waters. Next to Hawaii, it has some of the most beautiful beaches in the United States.
The sugar white sandy beaches, the crystal-clear turquoise green waters, plus an abundance of kid-friendly activities makes the Emerald Coast the perfect blend of relaxation, adventure and beauty. Unlike the chilly Pacific Coast beaches, the water in the Gulf can get warm in the summer, hovering around 78°F (25.5°C) to 84°F (28.9°C) from June to August, which is still cooler than the outside temperatures which could be in the 80s to 90s.
This family vacation spot is on my bucket list of things to do. So you may be wondering like I am: what are the best beach towns? Where are the best beaches? What is there to do along Florida’s Emerald Coast?
Grab some coffee and let’s explore these amazing coastal towns together.
Destin
Known as the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village,” Destin offers beautiful beaches, excellent fishing opportunities, and a bustling harbor. Visitors can enjoy water sports, explore the Destin Harbor Boardwalk, or take a dolphin cruise.
One interesting aspect of Destin’s history is its early beginnings as a small fishing village. In the early 20th century, the area was inhabited by a tight-knit community of fishermen and their families. Legend has it that the town was originally named “Destin” after a local fisherman, Captain Leonard Destin, who settled in the area around the mid-19th century. Captain Destin was known for his exceptional fishing skills and played a significant role in establishing the fishing industry in the region.
Over time, Destin grew from a quaint fishing village into a popular tourist destination, renowned for its emerald-green waters, white sandy beaches, and world-class fishing opportunities. Despite its transformation, Destin still maintains its connection to its fishing roots, with a bustling harbor and an active commercial and recreational fishing industry.
This unique blend of history, natural beauty, and a thriving fishing culture adds to the charm and character of Destin, making it a fascinating destination for visitors seeking a mix of coastal relaxation, outdoor adventure, and a glimpse into the area’s rich maritime heritage.
